How the School System Failed My Son

My son has had an IEP Individual Education Plan for as long as I can remember. He has always been in special classes and had extra help. It was just the way things had to be.

Math was his strong point and in 10th grade he passed the regular 10th grade exam at the end of the year. Yay, most would say, how exciting, what an accomplishment, but for Jeffrey that started a downward spiral!

The new laws state that any child that can pass a regular exam should pass each of the regular exams, therefore, being put into regular classes. What a major change for a child that already has huge problems with school and change.

Now instead of graduating at 19 he will go on until he passes each of the classes, a task pretty much impossible. In his mind each day of regular class is a torture chamber with everyone starring at him, looking down at him and many teasing him. This was not a feasible situation for him.

His dreams of graduating were over and life had become unbearable! What would have been his senior year (if not for the new laws) turned 180 degrees. Thinking he must attend school to follow family rules he instead ran away and became a dishwasher with no chance of learning a trade.

Do you know anyone with similar circumstances? Do you know of school laws that must change for the students?
