Jambo Book Club Helpful for Back To School

I received a sample in exchange for a honest an unbiased review.

Reading is so important for children. I have probably said that a million times here on the blog. Reading helps children learn about themselves and others. They learn that often times there are differences in our lives such as culture, color, religion, and other areas. As they learn they appreciate these differences and realize it’s truly what makes our beautiful world spin. This is where Jambo Book Club fits in!

Jambo Book Club is a monthly book subscription that will send your children quality books that cover stories teaching our children to appreciate and value all the differences that might be in one person to the next.

We had the opportunity to receive a box this month with two books. Both of these books are bright, colorful and put together with high-quality materials. The books are hard covered with beautiful illustrations. They are perfect and easy to read for my child’s age.

The first book we read is called My Family Plays Music written by Judy Cox and illustrated by Elbrite Brown. This is a 15th Anniversary Edition published with the Holiday House. It’s an easy read for my four year old with large colorful beautiful pages to keep her interest.

This book is about a multiracial family who loves music. Each family member loves a certain type of music and has an instrument that they play. A young percussionist tries many different instruments in this award winning primer on musical genres. Beautiful and festive cut paper art helps the sound of music to leap off the page as she plays in her aunt's jazz group, her daddy’s string quartet and her brother's rock band. This book is a lively celebration of diversity, creativity, family and collaboration.

The author of My Family Plays Music is Judy Cox, a teacher, and musician. She has written more than 25 children’s books. Two of her books have been Time Best children’s books of the year.

The illustrator of this book is Elbrite Brown a fine artist, art teacher and award-winning illustrator of children’s book.

The other amazing book we had the opportunity to receive from Jambo Book Club is called Thunder Boy JR. written by Sherman Alexis and illustrated by Yuyi Morales. This was also a perfect read for my child’s age. I liked that the book is about a little boy. My child is a girl and it’s important that children read about the opposite sex as well as their own. After all, girls are capable of anything boys can do.

Thunder Boy JR is named after his daddy. He has been thinking he wants his own name, just because his dad is called Big Thunder doesn’t mean he wants to be called Little Thunder. He wants a cool name that celebrates something cool he has done. Just when Thunder Boy thinks all hope is lost He and his dad pick the perfect name, a name that will surely light up the sky. This book celebrates the special relationship between a father and his son.

This book was written by Sherman Alexie, a National Book award winning author, poet and filmmaker. He is one of the most well known and loved literary writers of his generation. He has received numerous awards and citations. Like Thunder, Boy Sherman was named for his father and resides in Seattle.

The illustrator Yuyi Morales migrated from Mexico to The United States in 1994. She has created some of the most celebrated children’s books. She is the winner of several awards including a Pura Belpre Medal and a Caldecott Honor for Viva Frida. Yuyi divides her time between Mexico and California. You can visit her website at

These were excellent books that my child is going to want to read repeatedly. I love that the books are colorful and vibrant. This would be an excellent way to gift a child for his or her birthday, a holiday or even A great way to gift another family.

Jambo Book Club is a super simple website to navigate. Just choose the box right for the ages of your children. They even have a box for mixed ages. Every month you will receive two inclusive children’s books. Order again by the end of the month to receive the following months box. They ship out their boxes by the 10th of every month.

At Jambo Book Club they comb through book stores libraries and the internet to find great children’s books. They read every book before they send them off. They look for entertaining stories that take place in familiar surroundings.

Jambo Book Club believes that the stories we tell our children matter from their youngest years. Children learn who and what we value. This conception is continuously reinforced with the stories we tell them and the characters in the stories. They believe it is important for children to read stories about children who look like them, as well as their neighbors who do not look like them.
