Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

We received a sample in exchange for a honest an unbiased review.

It looks like my family has a new favorite video game, let me tell you a little about it. Mario is a classic character that fans of all ages enjoy playing. There's a new story unfolding folks, in the Mario and Sonic franchise. It promises a great time with friends and family. They have even included some retro events in the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 (Nintendo Switch) from Sega.

In this version of Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the story mode is five hours long and includes an ongoing story. Mario and Sonic get sucked into a video game based Olympic Games of 1964, this was a nefarious plan schemed up by Dr. Eggman and Bowser who want to trap the pair. They are trying to escape this time and return to modern-day Tokyo.

In modern-day Tokyo Luigi and Tails are also trying to find a solution to fix this situation. The game switches from the past to the present frequently as these characters try to find their way back to their own time with two maps with various activities and fun interactions. You learn about your surroundings and participate in activities to move on to the next location.

Players also earn as a result of playing the game. When competing in the modern-day events you will come across a new character. If you win against them you win the right to play with them in all other modes for that certain activity. There are ten special minigames throughout the adventure. They are available after completion in the game room. This is where you will be able to enjoy longer versions of these activities.

Both maps offer unique locations to uncover, small areas where you can speak to whoever is there. It is pretty awesome that Tokyo's big landmarks such as the Tokyo Skytree were recreated in the game.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 offers 21 3-D sporting minigames, three Dream events and ten brand new Tokyo 1964 offerings. Games like football, Fencing, Sport Climbing, Skateboarding, and Rugby Sevens being some of the highlights. This means there are 34 games to play. These support both button and motion controls.

The games are not long but you do have some control over how long some of the events are. You can adjust the playtime or the amount of points that are required to win. The Dream Events are Dream Racing, Dream Karate, and Dream Shooting. These are all a fun time. In the Dream Racing players ride on a skateboard down a course in the sky while grabbing Mario Kart items. In the Mushroom Kingdom of Super Mario Odyssey is where Dream Karate takes place. You hit your opponents so they end up landing on panels that will change them to your icon and color, earning you those points in the process. While players Dream Shoot they will explore the grounds of a Japanese temple while shooting targets.

The ten 1964 2D events can be played with buttons. Players are going to jump from diving boards and have to press a selection of buttons before reaching the water. Another awesome minigame here is Marathon. You will have to keep up the pace by pressing the A button and avoiding obstacles. You will have to pick up water to keep up stamina. The characters are so cute as they roam about in this minigame. Paddle, Paddle Mario is where Mario in all his glory will show off his arm muscles as he paddles his way toward victory.

The online play mode for this game is great. You can play against friends and show the world your records. The Dream Events along with all the regular games can be played in three ways, ranked match mode in which you will be grouped with players whose skill level is similar to your own. Rank high and you will climb the ladder. If your only in it for fun no worries you can select an event and play with other players who want to enjoy the same game. You can choose Worldwide, Regional or Friends and select the max number of players allowed. Players are able to send each other messages. All the options are extremely simple and there is only a ton of fun to be had.

Mario and Sonic Tokyo 2020 looks amazing on the Nintendo Switch. The 20 characters are just great some new and some we have seen before. The Tokyo landmarks are awesome. This game has a lot to offer with the five hours practically flying by. This game is packed with 34 fun and amusing minigames.

The kids are loving this as well as the adults in our house. This is quite a packed version with so many games. The developers put real effort into making the experience of this game super fun. There are so many ways to play and have fun.
